JOY LEE FERGUSON, age 70 of Cement City, passed away on Monday, January 11, 2010 at her home.
She was born on February 28, 1939 in Milford, Iowa to Elmer B. and Gretchen L. (Bates) VanderAarde. She married Robert E.. Ferguson on November 5, 1997 in Somerset, MI, and he survives.
Joy was raised in Spencer, Iowa, she then lived in California, North Dakota
and then in the Lake Somerset area since 1995. Joy graduated from Spencer,
Iowa High School in 1957. She was formerly employed at Noble
Manufacturing in Sac City, Iowa. She was a member of the Somerset
Congregational Church and the Somerset Womens Club, member of the
Inter-Lakes Lions Club, where she was active in the Diabetes Detection. Joy
performed free testing for Diabetes at the Hillsdale County Fair and at the
Jackson Cascades. She wrote a Diabetes Cook Book where she has a copy
of her book in the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. and also a cook
book in Braille at Southern Michigan Prison in Jackson. Joy enjoyed
knitting, crocheting, needle point and genealogy of the Ferguson family.
She also enjoyed going to Flea Markets where she sold farm toys and
equipment at the fairgrounds and also sold hand crafted items.
Joy, along with her husband organized the Ferguson family reunion for the
past several years.
Surviving besides her husband Bob are one daughter, Christine (Dave) Knox
of Pittsford, three sons, Tim Schlicht of Van Nuys, CA, Kevin (Evelyn)
Ferguson of Lake Somerset, David (Wendie) Ferguson of Bentonville, AK,
six grandchildren, one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by
her parents and one brother, Robert VanderAarde.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Addison. A visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. Saturday until the time of the service.
